Thatched roofs have been a feature of many village houses and cottages for many centuries, and until recently there has been a resident thatcher – George Samways was the last.
Sadly, thatch fires have been the cause of many houses being damaged or destroyed – one image is of Brook Cotttages being thatched early in the 19th century; early in the 20th, Brook Cottages were twice devastated by such fires.
In recent times, much thatching work in East Meon has been conducted by Master Thatcher Lyle Morgan; a profile was written for Meon Matters and is attached as a PDF.
