Edward Bone in later life.
We understand that the photographs of road-building were taken on the Leydene Estate in around 1930. William Jeremiah Christmas, in the featured photo, was the father of Herbie Goddard, who was Chairman of the Parish Council and of the Village Hall Committee in the 1960s/70s.
Edward Bone was a hero of World War I, click here for a description of the action which won him the DCM. He came to work at the Leydene Estate after the Great War, and appears to have continued working there when it became HMS Mercury (as did his wife).
