Hazel Pamplin, daughter of Herbie Goddard, has made this collection available to the Archive. Herbie was was fondly known as the Mayor of East Meon. (Click here for an account of Herbie’s life and contributions to the village, on the History website.)
The collection is in four parts. One contains records of Hazel’s grandfather William Jeremiah Christmas, his wife and daughters, three of whom married Canadians just after World War I. (Click here for an account of this side of the family.)
A second contains newspaper articles and other papers mainly relating to Herbie Goddard’s life in East Meon, as proprietor of a garage on the High Street and in his service to the Parish and the Village Hall.
The third is a collection of photographs and notes on Herbie and his family.
The fourth has photographs and notes on the North American branch of the family, which includes Dr Michael Barratt, a space doctor and astronaut.
